What Not To Wear

This past weekend I headed to the ol' stompin' grounds to hit the bar scene with NotSusan, my go-to girl for crazy, night-out antics. We started off at our favorite bar ever, the place where so much has happened and I always look forward to going to.

I knew ahead of time that NotSmellsGood would be around but, unfortunately, he's off the market as his relationship is hitting the multiple years mark and our flirting days are over. It's okay though because except for that one drunken night when I kissed him many, many years ago, nothing was ever going to happen with him. Not that I even wanted it to since he's well, related to NotRoger and what a weird, sick relationship that would be!

NotTownie had also gotten in touch with me earlier in the day to check on my plans so I was definitely looking forward to seeing him. We had a few moments of our usual sexual innuendo-filled conversation but he actually ended up headed home early because he didn't feel well. It's okay though because he made sure to tell me he would be around all summer. Yes!

After getting hit on by a Snoop Dogg look alike with some interesting dance moves, we moved on to our second location to meet up with NotSmellsGood and his girlfriend. This is also where NotDreds met up with us. The second place was better and worse at the same time. I hate going out in the summer because not only does my hair get gross from the humidity but, the bars get so stinking hot! This second place was outside so it did feel a little less stuffy but it definitely wasn't my scene.

The best part of that place, though, was commenting on the other women's outfits with NotDreds. I find it fascinating to find out what guys consider hot or sexy and what they are totally turned off by or find slutty or ugly. I was wearing a black skirt and low-cut, scoop-neck black shirt with just enough turquise peaking through. NotDreds approved but it may have been my hott (NOT-FLAT!) shoes I was wearing. He did NOT like the few girls daringly trying the shorts look and tended to prefer fitted capri pants over the loose ones. He was all over the map with his shirt preferences. I commented favorably on those outfits I found fashionable while he developed no theme to his preferences. His favorite outfit of the Fashion Police session was on the Claire Danes look-alike wearing tight jeans and an even tighter pink lace, sleeveless shirt.

I really want to do more of this and ask more of my guy friends what clothing items appeal to them. It is fascinating to me and I won't stop until I find some rhyme and reason to their choices for "hot". Not that it will necessarily affect how I dress but any peak into that male brain is one I'll take.

Black lace dress on blondes - or more commonly referred to as Britney circa 2002.

My fave. :)

I don't care about blondes, though;) I'm brunette. They're better.

I also love to know what men think of fashion these days. Sometimes I walk out in an outfit and my hubs just shakes his head.

But then again he wears a lot of t-shirts.

I care about blondes (since, well I am one) and I would never be caught dead in a black lace dress... unless I was dressing up as Elvira for Halloween.

For the most part, I think I dress fine. There are a few days when I mistakenly wear my "fat pants" that make me look like I'm on a weight watchers commercial and i can pull the waist band out in front of me about 5 inches. But that's on days when I haven't done laundry in awhile...

what was the question again?

I think people should wear more black. It's so flattering and whenever I see someone wear it and they haven't for awhile, it's so striking.

I think it's funny guys often tell me they hate capris/shorts. I can't wear jeans in the summer though. I'm like 99% skirts.

NOT BLACK! Holy smokes that the easiest cop out. What do you wear when in doubt? The little black dress. Why, because it creates less shadows and hides unwanted curves around the midsection. There's also the cut, the design or print (drawing attention to certain parts)... so many variables.

Even my girlfriend, who has been blessed with curves in all the right places, can look poorly if, for example, she is wearing a loose dress.

My advice: choose something that flatters you, over something that you really thinks is in style. There's no point in wearing prada if it makes you look like a hippo, whereas Old Navy would've made you look like Scarlett Johansen.

oh and kellie - I am sure the hubby has a lot of other hidden talents. At least clothes you can change!

Blondes may claim to have more fun, but brunettes know how to keep a secret.

I say you've got the look.... but hell, at my age, anyone has the look when it comes to the club scene... How I wish I could time warp back 10 years! I love your blog. Found it from Shangri La.

i never said no to black, hell I wear black often... it's perfect when combined with a bright color.

and this blonde knows how to keep a secret.

I do this with my guy friends all of the time. Pick their brains about clothes, sex, relationships...anything.

Someone needs to throw some ice water on Tommy, I think.

I'm surprised no one has said the gem: "My favorite outfit is the one on the floor" REOW!

come on.. I know that a guy's favorite look on a girl is a t-shirt and thong / bikinis. (nothing else of course). Too bad I can't wear that wherever I go.
I like black, but rarely if ever, wear black on black. I like the black and white look.. but since I've moved to FL, I'm more into looking like a bum. Well not really, but I wear a lot of khaki and white stuff.. not sloppily though. Is sloppily a word?

Finding out what guys like to see girls wear is so eye opening. Last summer I was in Chicago at a bar and a girl was wearing something I thought was so skanky, so 10 years ago (button down shirt, tiny plad skirt, pigtails and heels)--and it was NOT a theme-night! All the girls thought she looked terrible (and yes we were jealous) but all the guys deemed it perfectly appropriate--go figure... ;)

Hmm, that's like asking me to recap about 1/5 of my discourse, but OK. Rule of thumb for me: Looking like you're going out to have a good time with your friends will always win over looking like you're trying to get hit on. When one looks like they're trying to get hit on, it either comes across as desperate or egotistical. Low-key is much more approachable. So for me, solid color t-shirt or tank top and jeans, that works for me. As one of my best friends (a woman) says, "Classic styles have been around for a long time for a reason." I also have a thing for women in hoodie sweatshirts.

Specific disklikes? Tubetops. It's become a running joke now since my friends will take pictures of themselves in tubetops and send them to me. But they're just goofy-looking and don't tend to flatter any body-type. They make big boobs look unnatural since they're held up weird in the tubetop and make petite women look like stick figures.

Those shirts that NC told me are called "empire waists," or as guys call them "maternity shirts." We took a poll at the bachelor party I was at last weekend and unanimously decided they suck.

I think capri pants look silly, but can't seem to get any support on this. I think the giant sunglasses look ridiculous because they neutralize the face by covering up about 2/3 of it. It's impossible to judge whether a pair of sunglasses and a mouth is pretty. While it's not technically clothes, Tramp Stamp lower back tattoos are a trump card deal-breaker for me. Yuck!

I've never been one to notice shoes. But comfortable shoes, whether they match the outfit or not, always work for me because it shows the wearer would rather be able to walk than be "fashionable." Sorry to be so long-winded. That's the abridged version. :)

Tube tops!! EWWWW!!!!

NotCarrie said...

I encourage the long comments, Senor! Thanks for the insight.

What about skirt length? and colors?

this is definitely interesting. i never knew that so many guys didn't like the shorts thing or tube tops. that's a surprise. i would have thought tube tops would be a hit if not at least a neutral.

i'm a jeans girl. especially since my office allows jeans, i'm almost perpetually in jeans.

NotCarrie said...

Tube tops are hard to pull off. The name itself is kind of unflattering.

Tube tops, yuck! I wish more people would realize they don't have the ability to pull off that look.

This is the start of an anti-tube top revolution!

(except for people who can pull them off, of course)

What else should we discourage?

I like a woman who dresses well: smart clothes, stylishly, but not following passing trends (that would show lack of independence); professional attire, fitted, cotton and wool, not too incipid colours; something that shows confidence without brashness, style and substance, an independent mind, a concern for, but not obsession with, her appearence. I like an old-fashioned style. Stylish (but not necessarily very high) shoes. No sportswear. And I can never resist a girl in a brimmed hat.

Whine Girl said...

NotCarrie, we need to discourage gouchos... don't ever let them come back.
Leggings
MC Hammer pants
Plastic pants / jackets
and the worst: pants with stirrups.
Ewww. What guy EVER found those attractive??!!

Hey, to answer your question, I can't really make any kind of declaration on skirts since the styles, lengths, and colors are really individual to each particular woman. Except for those little white skirts with the ruffles that were inexplicably popular like 2 years ago. Those made people look like a 13-year-old hooker.

I'm also curious about where the pointy shoes phenomenon came from. Most women I've talked to about this look like they've been struck by lightning when I criticize them. The best I've heard about them from another guy is that they tolerate them, but I don't think any guys like them. The phenomenons that succeed in the face of any XY support always fascinate me the most. (see: the giant sunglasses also) I think I'm enjoying this thread too much.

NotCarrie said...

I don't like the pointy shoes either. I think they look good on very few people and I've never understood how people walk in them...all that extra length;)

I don't get those pointy shoes either! I can't pull off that look, but more power to those who can.
